Geo Vedolla and the Cougars suffered their first conference loss of the season on Saturday against Payson.

The Chino Valley boys' soccer team is human after all.

The Cougars, rolling through most of the fall season to the tune of a 9-0 conference record while coming off a 14-0 victory late last week, found themselves in a rare loss Saturday afternoon in Chino, getting blanked 1-0 by Payson.

Not to mention the first time all season they've been shut out.

"It was a really close game and could have gone either way," Chino head coach Jim Clark said. "We had our opportunities with 18 shots and a couple right inside the box and at the goal. But we just had a little bad luck and that's the way soccer goes sometimes. I think there's some good lessons that we can learn from this."

Chino closes out the regular season this week with a road match at Phoenix Country Day on Tuesday and a home match with Camp Verde on Thursday.

The 12-team state tournament opens Oct. 25 at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert.
